Super Bowl 50 saw the American Football Conference (AFC) winner Denver Broncos defeat the National Football Conference (NFC) winner Carolina Panthers 24–10 to secure their third Super Bowl.

The Broncos had accounted for the defending champions, New England Patriots, 20-18 in the AFC decider and it could be the Patriots who are the team to beat this year too.

The main contenders in the AFC would appear to be Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, the Broncos and the Patriots.  There are just too many question marks about the Steelers, whilst the Bengals have a reputation for blowing it in the play-offs.  There have been a number of changes at the Broncos and they could be heavily reliant on their defense again.

The pick is the Patriots, although there is a concern with Tom Brady being suspended for the first four games and their relying on Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback in his absence.  An opening game away to the Arizona Cardinals could easily be a loss.

The Cardinals are a good shout in the NFC Conference, but there is also a strong case to be made for the Seattle Seahawks, the Panthers and the Green Bay Packers.

The same could have been said for the Minnesota Vikings until they lost quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a serious knee injury that included a torn ACL less than two weeks before the start of the regular season.

The fitness of Carson Palmer will be key for the Cardinals and they should go close.  The Panthers surprised everyone last year and they will be counting on another standout season from Cam Newton, but they have lost the services of the league’s top defensive back in Josh Norman.

The Seahawks were Super Bowl winners in 2014 and runners-up in 2015.  Quarterback Russell Wilson comes into the new season on the back of a storming year and with the defense largely intact from those two Super Bowls, they are another strong contender.

After starting the season with a 10-0 record, the Packers were hit hard by injuries last year, but if they can keep a clean bill of health they could be the pick for the NFC given the reliability of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
