Reality TV betting: Hughie ticks all the right boxes in Big Brother 17

Remarkably Big Brother 17 is already a fortnight old.  Equally surprising is the non-appearance of late entries and the eviction of just one contestant, Marco.  However, only 16 of the original Big Brother contestants remain, with Andrew removed from the house and one half of the twins (Victoria) walking out within the first eight days.

Marco, in case you missed him, is the grossly over tattooed son of celebrity chef Marco Pierre White.  Andrew is a four-time kickboxing world champion and Victoria is a DJ.  That’s because this series of the Channel 5 show has a Z-list celeb shape to it as opposed to its conventional ‘lad and ladette off the street’ situation.

Conventional wisdom says the key to pin-pointing a likely winner is to simply opt for the ‘Z-lister’ with the highest profile and opt for them.  Unfortunately in Celebrity Big Brother and another TV reality show, ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’, this simple system is proven to be a money pit.

What does have a 100% record is success for any contestant, in either show, that has appeared in MTV’s Geordie Shore.  That number includes Scotty T, Charlotte Crosby and Vicky Pattison.

And so, while it is not a direct link, Alex Cannon, who featured in the MTV series Judge George alongside Vicky Pattison, has to be of extreme interest.  However, the 27-year-old male model from Liverpool is top-priced 7/2 (at William Hill) and that’s mighty short in a 16-runner race where the form figures show early favourites have a poor record.

Hughie is our dark horse to win BBUK

On a positive note he is male and to-date this show has thrown up nine male winners, six female winners and a transgender victor.  But every silver lining has a cloud and to confuse the betting angle just consider six of the top seven in the betting are male candidates.

Now, unquestionably the winner of Big Brother will be entertaining but that ‘entertainment value’ can come in any form, such as comical, loveable and dislikeable – as Helen Wood’s 2014 victory testifies.

And, remarkably, contestants involved in in-house romance successfully alienate themselves from the voting public.  Such coupled-off pairs never do well.  At this stage that limits the appeal of 16/1 shot Georgina (formerly appeared in the TV series ‘Taking New York’) and 11/2 poke Jackson (a Calvin Klein model), the pair who have been cosying up together in recent days.

So, at the current prices, our selection is 21-year-old Irish traveller Hughie Maughan.  The Irish do well in this show, as do gay and bisexual men – exhibit A being 2001 winner Brian Dowling.  Furthermore Paddy Doherty, a traveller, is a previous Celebrity Big Brother winner.

In short Hughie ticks a lot of boxes and appears in a number of pigeon holes – the largest one probably being the ‘Irish vote’.  And, therein, he is our early pick at 5/1 with Ladbrokes, Bet365 and Coral
