After receiving a 7-0 drubbing at the Camp Nou on Match-day 1 of the group stage, Celtic will be desperate to put in an improved showing against Barcelona in the return game in front of their own supporters.

Domestically Celtic had a 10-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership going into Friday’s trip to Kilmarnock, having won all but one of their 11 league games to date.  It may only be November, but the Scottish title is already all but in the bag.

That level of domestic dominance doesn’t help when coming up against the European heavyweights, where they need to raise their game several levels if they are to compete.  Playing in front of vociferous support at Celtic Park can help to compensate for their relative lack of quality, but at this point in the group stage there might not be quite so much for the fans to get excited about.

Celtic are already realistically out of the running for a place in the Champions’ League knock-out stage, but their surprise 1-1 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach in their last group game has at least kept alive their hopes of pipping the Germans for the consolation of the Europa League spot.  It’s highly unlikely still, with victory against Barca or away to Manchester City in their final group game being the minimum requirement.

With Barcelona having lost 3-1 at Manchester City in their last group game, Luis Enrique’s men still have work to do if they are to ensure finishing top of Group C.  It means that they have a definite incentive to secure a win in Glasgow.

Celtic did come out on top 2-1 when the teams met in a Champions’ League tie four years ago, but that was a team featuring the likes of Fraser Forster and Victor Wanyama.  This team looks weaker.

Barcelona are best odds of 3/10 to win this game, so the best option to look elsewhere for value.  Barca have scored 14 goals in their four group games to date, while Celtic have conceded 13.  A Barca win and a few goals could be on the cards here.
