With Arsenal having been thrashed by Bayern Munich last week and Leicester City’s domestic form suggesting that they will be hard pushed to see off the challenge of Sevilla, England’s best hope of Champions’ League success this season would appear to rest with Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s team have rediscovered a little of their early season form in recent weeks and go into the 1st leg of their last 16 tie at the City of Manchester Stadium unbeaten in six matches in all competitions.

This is certainly no easy task though.  No team in Europe’s major leagues has been finding the back of the net with the same regularity as Monaco this term, with the Ligue 1 table-toppers having amassed an impressive 76 goals in 28 games to date.

Few would have expected anyone to challenge Paris Saint-Germain’s domestic dominance this season, but the Monégasques have been excellent throughout the campaign and justifiably lead the way in the French league.

With City’s defence having looked suspect all season, Leonardo Jardim’s impressive young team will fancy their chances of coming away with at least one away goal to their name.

Given the attacking talent in the Monaco ranks, this might not be a game where playing Fernandinho at full-back is the best option for Guardiola and the he coach also has a big call to make in deciding between Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero in goal.

Man City v Monaco team news

Monaco are currently undefeated in 12 games in all competitions and have already defeated Tottenham Hotspur home and away in the Champions’ League group stage this season (2-1 on both occasions).  They also have an impressive record against English clubs in Europe in two-legged ties down the years.

The Citizens will be missing the injured duo of Gabriel Jesus and Vincent Kompany, while there is also a doubt over Gael Clichy.  For their part, the visitors will be without the Brazilian duo of defender Jemerson (suspended) and midfielder Boschilia (knee injury).

Man City v Monaco prediction

Both these teams have goals in them and with City never looking terribly secure defensively, backing Both Teams To Score (‘BTTS’) at 8/11 (1.73) with Betfair looks worth a punt.
