It’s the Group F decider at the Bernabeu on Wednesday evening, with Real Madrid needing the win to pip Borussia Dortmund to top spot in the group and secure the theoretical benefit of being a seeded team for the knock-out stage draw.

With both teams already assured of their places in the last 16 going into this game, there is no great pressure on either of them, so this should make for an entertaining encounter.  Whilst finishing top of the group would certainly be preferable, it’s not of absolute critical importance to either.

The reverse fixture at the Westfalenstadion in late September finished as a 2-2 draw, with Dortmund twice coming from behind to salvage a point thanks to André Schürrle hitting an 87th-minute equalizer.

Following the 1-1 draw away to arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday, Real Madrid can also equal a club record of 34 games without defeat in all competitions if they can avoid defeat against the Germans.  That may well be their greatest motivation here.

For Los Blancos, Gareth Bale is a long-term injury and Alvaro Morata is scheduled to be out for a couple more weeks yet.  Toni Kroos is back in training but, even if he is deemed fit, it would seem unlikely that Zinedine Zidane would risk him in a game that isn’t an absolute must-win.

For their part, Dortmund will be missing first-choice goalkeeper Roman Bürki (broken hand).  Long-term absentees Sven Bender and Neven Suboti? are back in full training following injury, but it would surely be too soon for either to start in Madrid.

Real Madrid v Dortmund tip

This looks likely to be an open game with Dortmund highly unlikely to sit back and look for a goalless draw.  Real Madrid are certainly backable at 10/11 (1.91) to win the match – it isn’t a price you get to back them at too often at the Bernabeu.  However, with goals looking likely, the value bet here could be to back a Real Madrid win with over 2.5 goals in the match.
