Manchester United take on Ajax Amsterdam in this season’s Europa League final. It is not just a European trophy at place, but a guaranteed spot in next season’s Champions League group stages and a financial windfall.

We take you through our match preview and betting tips for the fixture at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Ajax v Manchester United Past Meetings

Despite the rich history possessed by both clubs, these two have only ever met on two previous occasions and that was five years ago – in the round of 32 in the Europa League.

United edged through on that occasion, triumphing 3-2 on aggregate – a 2-0 victory in the Netherlands followed by a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

The Ajax side from that day included a host of future Premier League stars such as Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen.

Ajax v Manchester United Stats

Manchester United are unbeaten in ten matches in the competition. Following group stage loses away at Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, the Red Devils have won seven of their last ten.

Ajax have lost each of their last three matches played outside of their Amsterdam Arena fortress in the competition. Defeats at FC Copenhagen, Schalke and Lyon, following a draw at Legia Warsaw, were not enough to derail their path to the final.

The Dutch side have netted 30 goals in their last 10 matches, while United haven’t scored more than twice in a game in their last 12 outings.

Jose Mourinho has won 11 of the 13 cup finals he has managed in, including this season’s League Cup final against Southampton.

Ajax v Manchester United Team News

Manchester United will be without three ACL knee injury victims – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and James Wilson, while Eric Bailly missed the final through suspension. Luke Shaw (foot) and Ashley Young (hamstring) are also out while Chris Smalling (toe) and Marouane Fellaini (hamstring) are minor doubts.

Ajax full-back Daley Sinkgraven will miss the final through injury while centre half Nick Viergever is suspended.

Reason for Ajax v Manchester United Bets

Manchester United go into this clash as favourites and whilst they may not have any momentum or any real form, they are simply viewed as the most reliable side to win a one-off game.

After all, this Ajax side has already lost three times en route to the final and whilst they are a fluid and exciting attacking outfit, plenty of question marks remain over their defence.

The Dutch team is also remarkably young, with the semi-final clash against Lyon seeing their players average age of just 22. Whilst this bodes remarkably well for their futures, it also points at a lack of experience which is most relevant in finals.

Odds of 11/13 for a United victory may not seem overly generous, but such is Mourinho’s experience in finals (11 wins from 13, to tie into the odds…) that it reflects a good bet.

Ajax have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight matches away from home while United have only lost four matches since October.

Teenage Danish striker Kasper Dolberg is on fire this season with 22 goals, six of which have come in the Europa League. Odds of 3/1 for him to add to this tally on Wednesday are extremely tempting and represent  terrific value.
