Belgian Grand Prix Betting Preview

This colossal four-mile circuit, where the inference is on sheer speed, is like meat and veg to the Mercedes team which have gone home from here victorious for the past four Formula One seasons.

And while this has not been missed on the F1 betting odds compilers (Lewis Hamilton is an odd-on favourite), they have both made mistakes and followed each other like headless sheep in betting markets other than the race winner.

Most glaringly the 7/4 on offer about ‘no safety car’ being used looks a good old fashioned mistake.  It has been needed in half of the last 12 races here but many of those races saw 22 or 24 cars set out.  This week just 20 cars will line-up on the starting grid.

Additionally the relatively new innovation of ‘virtual safety car’ has meant many traditional safety car inducing incidents, such as debris on the track, no longer calls for the real thing to be rolled-out.

Combined with the form, surely a ‘no safety car’ scenario should be odds-on and not the 7/4 bet365, Paddy Power, William Hill, Betfair and Stan James are going – like I say “sheep”.

Valtteri Bottas may be Racing and Could go Fastest

A Mercedes car has started on pole, won the race and set the fastest lap here for all of the last three seasons.  Given that stat and the German car expected to be in a class of one this weekend, the 6/1 available about Valtteri Bottas setting the fastest lap looks generous F1 odds.

Admittedly the Finnish driver has claimed just one ‘fastest lap’ during his career but he had never won a race prior to the start of this season and now he has won two.

Given his cars expected superiority and the prediction his teammate will be controlling the race from the front (instead of ‘racing’) there’s every reason to believe 6/1 is too big about Bottas doubling his ‘fastest lap’ tally.

Could be a Top-10 Stroll for Lance

Talking of Mercedes speed, let us not forget the Williams team is propelled by a Mercedes engine.  It loved the high-speed race track in Baku where Lance Stroll finished third, narrowly missing out on second by inches.

Stroll failed to finish his first three races in F1 but since then he has enjoyed three Top-10 finishes. That’s three from the last five outings and the prospect of him taking that record to four from six is surely no 6/4 shot.
