Formula 1 Betting Preview

Sunday’s US Grand Prix from Austin Texas is the seventeenth race of the 20 race 2017 Championship. Our Formula 1 betting preview takes you through our fancies and predictions for this exciting F1 weekend.

The first three races of the season saw wide-margin winners and a relatively high rate of attrition (five, five and seven drivers failing to be classified as finishers).  This can be attributed to teams, and cars, adjusting to new specifications.

But as the season has progressed cars have become slightly more reliable and winning margins have shown definite shrinkage.  Just three of the last 13 Formula 1 races have been won by a margin in excess of 5sec.

When you cross reference this trend of narrow margin winners the previous results at Sunday’s circuit, you will have to conclude a winning margin of 5sec or less is a knock-out bet with Betfred.

The Stoke-based online bookmaker make the under 5sec margin an 11/10 poke which is surely over-priced given just one of the five races staged here have been won by more than 5sec.  That year was 2013 when just 6.2sec separated race winner Sebastian Vettel and runner-up Romain Grosjean.

3/5 Stat Makes 5/2 F1 Betting Value

The grid position of the winner is an interesting one.  So far three US Grand Prix winners have started from second on the grid and only two on pole.

Given the car starting second on the grid can be backed at 5/2 for race victory on Sunday, there’s grounds to support it.

Lewis Hamilton in No Hurry

But the best F1 bet of the weekend is opposing Lewis Hamilton in the opening practice session on Friday.

The Brit may have the fastest car and will arrive here full of confidence but that is no guarantee his Mercedes team will stress their engines more than the absolute minimum during an exploratory opening practice session.

Hamilton is 6/5 (2.20) to go fastest in the opening practice session (P1) which takes some believing when you consider he has topped the P1 timesheets just once in the last seven race weekends. In fact he has only claimed the accolade four times in the last 21 practice sessions.

Given the Champion elect has claimed pole position five times from seven race weekends over the same period, it’s pretty obvious Mercedes are not giving these practice sessions every last piece of horse power that they have in their engines.

There’s two ways of going here.  Reach for the ‘lay’ button on the Betfair Exchange or back some of Hamilton’s chief rivals with the exception of his team-mate, Valtteri Bottas.

In fact, with Sebastian Vettel also under-priced (he’s 3/1 but has gone fastest in P1 just twice this year), we have it narrowed down to Kimi Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

Summary: Recommended F1 Bets:

  • Winning Margin Under 5sec – 11/10 Betfred

  • Winner to Start Second on Grid – 5/2 Betfred

  • Kimi Raikkonen Fastest in P1  – 7/1 William Hill

  • Daniel Ricciardo Fastest in P1 – 7/1 Betfred

  • Max Verstappen Fastest in P1 – 15/2 Betfred

The US Grand Prix is broadcast on both Channel 4 and Sky Sports. The first practice session starts Friday 4pm GMT.
