Lewis Hamilton is too short for fourth consecutive British GP victory

Lewis Hamilton is a very short priced favourite for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend.

The British driver has won the last three races staged at the Northamptonshire circuit but he has enjoyed a performance advantage over his rivals courtesy of a dominant Mercedes car.

That advantage has evaporated this season with Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari looking every part as good and, in some instances better, than its adversary.

F1 Betting Tips

  • British Grand Prix race winner: Sebastian Vettel 5/2 William Hill

  • Daniel Ricciardo 20/1 each way bet365

  • Winning Race Margin: 10sec+ 15/8 Paddy Power

  • Top-6 Finish: Esteban Ocon 15/8 SkyBet

  • To NOT finish the race: Max Verstappen 2/1 bet365

At the prices it is well worth opposing Lewis Hamilton, he has won three races this season (from nine) which you could argue makes him a 2/1 shot for victory this weekend.  F1 is not an exact science but, no matter how you interpret recent form, you cannot back him at his current odds-on quote.

We’ll take him on with F1 Drivers Championship leader Sebastian Vettel and place a second wager on Azerbaijan GP winner Daniel Ricciardo at a tasty each-way price of 20/1.  Reluctantly we will leave Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas, out of our bets despite him scoring twice this season.

On the distance

The 2017 race will be the eighth staged at the reconfigured Silverstone.  The previous seven renditions have seen some very big winning margins and three times it has been greater than 10 sec.

Paddy Power are going 15/8 about a 10sec+ margin on Sunday and that looks well worth a punt.

Ocon a snip for Top-Six

A trawl through previous results show the form of the Canadian GP translates well when it comes to the results we can expect here. That makes Esteban Ocon, at 15/8, a nap selection for a top-six finish on Sunday.

The Frenchman could have arguably finished third in Canada and has breached the top-six in three of the last five races.

Max out again?

Finally the 2/1 about Max Verstappen not being a classified finisher has to be taken.  The Dutchman has only seen the chequered flag twice in the past seven races courtesy of a number of ailments with his car.

There were five non-finishers in this race last year and six in 2015, so even if his car suddenly remains reliable there’s a fair chance collision damage could end his day prematurely anyway.
