World Grand Prix Darts Tips:

  • Daryl Gurney to beat Adrian Lewis 10/11 (1.85) Boylesports

  • James Wade to beat Steve West 2-0 Correct Score at 27/10 (2.70) Unibet

  • Gary Anderson to make the final 11/8 (2.38) Coral

The action starts on Sunday night with eight first round matches.

The Grand Prix is unique by virtue that all games require a ‘double to start’.  It certainly adds another dimension to the action but, if anything, it further separates the wheat from the chaff as players who are simply ‘high scoring’ but have low doubles percentages suffer.

Remarkably, given the format, a scan through the list of previous winners (particularly since the event moved to its current venue in 2001) shows that class act can prevail and you should be looking for a player at the head of the betting as an outright winner.  Only once has there been an exception to that rule, 2015 when Robert Thornton prevailed.

The roll of honour reads:  Warriner, Taylor, Taylor, Lloyd, Taylor, Taylor, Wade, Taylor, Taylor, Wade, Taylor, van Gerwen, Taylor, van Gerwen, Thornton and van Gerwen.

Home boy can do good

Of the opening round matches Daryl Gurney looks a great World Grand Prix darts bet to win.  The 31-year-old hails from Derry in Northern Ireland and he is the only Irish player in the competition. He is sure to get the full support of a fanatical crowd and the encouragement that carried Brendan Dolan all the way to the final in 2011.

He will have to overcome the No. 4 seed, Adrian Lewis but the 2011 & 2012 World Darts Champion blows very hot and cold these days and he was certainly exceptionally cold when last seen in competitive action, being beaten in all three round-robin games in the Champions League of Darts less than two weeks ago.

Wade in

James Wade is twice a winner of this World Grand Prix Darts competition and has also made two semi-finals in Dublin.  He may not be at his very best these days but he will surely have too much fire-power for Steve West who has been struggling to make much impression in lowly ‘players championship’ events in recent times.

Irish firm Boylesports are going 27/10 (2.70) about Wade winning in the -1.5 handicap market.  This proposition, which is basically the same darts bet of a 2-0 correct score in sets, comes highly recommended.

MVG to Breeze or Blow Out?

As for the outright market… Such is the current state of the game it is usually best to start at the top of the bookmaker’s lists and work your way down with an ever thickening black marker.  Few sports have so much player-on-player history, stats and form readily available.  Consequently the old enemy rarely make meaningful mistakes.

Unsurprisingly heading their lists is reigning champion Michael van Gerwen.  The 28-year-old Dutch master has been riding on a crest of a wave since the 2014 World Grand Prix, winning 19 of the 28 major tournaments he has played.

But MVG has recently welcomed a new baby into the world and the formbooks of countless sportsmen have been blotted by the arrival of a first born child. Given his first competition post fatherhood resulted in defeat, in the round-robin stages, of the Champions League of Darts just a fortnight ago, he comes here with a big question-mark hanging over him.

Gary Anderson, 18 years van Gerwen’s senior, is Mr Consistent.  Runner-up to MVG in this year’s World Championship (and winner in 2015 and 2016) the Scotsman was most recently runner-up to Mensur Suljovic in the Champions League of Darts.

We like him at lot but with no clear indication of the kind of form MVG will bring to this event, the prudent play is the conservative one, and that is backing Anderson to make the final.  Let us not forget, drawn in separate sides of the draw, they cannot meet until the final.

Grand Prix Format

Opening round Grand Prix matches are the best of just three sets, the second round and quarters are the best of five, the semi the best of seven and final the best of nine.  Sadly Phil Taylor, in his retirement year and an eleven time winner, misses the event.
