Already promoted Portsmouth complete their final fixture in English football’s fourth tier as they host lowly Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

We take you through our predictions and betting tips for the fixture at Fratton Park, which will have a party mood with the hosts maintaining lingering hopes of a title.

Past Portsmouth v Cheltenham meetings

Incredibly, these sides have met five times before and all five clashes have ended in draws.

The meeting between the pair earlier in the season finished 1-1 at Cheltenham – Daniel O’Shaughnessy giving the hosts the lead before Michael Smith struck back for the South Coast club late on.

The two previous clashes at Fratton Park have ended 2-2 and 0-0 respectively, with all previous matches also coming in League Two.

Portsmouth v Cheltenham Stats

Pompey have won nine of their last eleven matches as they confirmed their spot in the division’s top three with games to spare, with a title not out of the question – they will need to beat Cheltenham and hope both Plymouth (at Grimsby) and Doncaster (at Hartlepool, who must win to avoid the drop) stumble on the final day.

Cheltenham’s away form has been poor all season long – only Yeovil Town have won fewer matches on the road than the Robins (4) away from home.

Portsmouth v Cheltenham Team News

Both sides have fully fit squads to chose from with no fresh injuries or suspension worries.

Reason for Portsmouth v Cheltenham bets

It’s impossible to look beyond Paul Cook’s side for a victory in this one – they know only a win will do in their pursuit of the League Two title and come up against opponents with nothing to play for, with a drop in intensity levels and focus natural consequences.

Having won nine of their last eleven matches all signs point to a home win, especially with Cheltenham’s continued poor away form throughout the campaign – accumulating only two points on the road more than Hartlepool, the worst travelers in the division.

This game is also likely to be low in terms of goals: Portsmouth have conceded only 39 goals in 45 league matches, comfortably the best defensive record in the division. Cheltenham meanwhile have found the net only 48 times in League Two – only relegated Leyton Orient (46) have been less successful in front of goal.

Pompey themselves have scored on average fewer than two goals per game at home while Cheltenham’s defence is relatively stable considering their league position – they’ve conceded three less than 6th-placed Carlisle.

Odds of 6/5 are favourable and don’t appear to take into account that Cheltenham have nothing to play for in this fixture and are willing to take a low-scoring defeat.
