Week 1 Betway Premier League Darts Betting Tips:

  • Gary Anderson to beat Michael van Gerwen 3/1 Betfred

  • Peter Wright to beat Jelle Klaasen by these scorelines:

  • 7-0 at 25/1 with William Hill

  • 7-1 at 14/1 with Ladbrokes

  • 7-2 at 6/1 with Stan James

The thirteenth edition of Darts’ Betway Premier League gets underway in Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on Thursday night.  The tournament last 16 weeks and concludes in London’s O2 Arena on May 18th.

Of the ten players taking part in the 2017 none are newcomers albeit Jelle Klaasen (last seen in 2009) and Kim Huybechts (last played in the 2015 Premier League) are the most inexperienced having played the competition just once beforehand.

That duo are the biggest outsiders in the ante-post betting with Huybrechts priced at 100/1 and Klaasen at 80/1 with the sponsors.  At the other end of the scale it’s the defending champion and 2013 winner, Michael van Gerwen, that tops the betting with Sportingbet offering the best price of 8/13 about the Dutchman.

Remarkably Phil Taylor, who has won this tournament an amazing six times, 2005-2008, 2010 and 2012 can be backed at 16/1 with Bwin, he sandwiches Gary Anderson (2011 and 2015 winner) and Peter Wright (11/1 Paddy Power).

There’s two more previous winners in the line-up:  2009 victor James Wade and 2014 scorer Raymond van Barneveld.  If you think either of this duo can make a run at the title head to Boylesports who are offering 25/1 and 33/1 about the pair plus their each-way terms are a third-of-the-odds places 1-2.

The Draw Factor

Unique to darts competition’s the Premier League format does allow for matches to potentially end in a draw and they frequently do.  In the 2015 Premier League there were 17 draws amongst the 73 matches leading up to the play-off stages where draws are not possible. 2016 saw 12 draws from 73 games.

Therein it is reasonable to expect one draw, from the five games played, every night the Premier League.

MVG’s Week One Fail?

Interestingly the opening night least season produced an upset, in Michael van Gerwen being beaten by James Wade, and a number of the other matches having authoritative score-lines (7-0, 7-1 and a 7-2).

And we believe there’s value in opting for another surprise result and a thumping score-line or two during week 1 of the 2017 Premier League.  The upset could be Gary Anderson inflicting another week 1 Premier League defeat on MVG.

Yes Anderson was beaten 11-7 by his rival in last week’s Unibet Masters final and MVG has not lost a game since last October but this race to seven games is a very different format and we think Anderson, who won one, lost one and drew one match during three meetings with MVG in last year’s Premier League has a far better chance than the 25% his odds of 3/1 represent.

Wright Old Thumping

As for a comprehensive victory, how about Peter Wright to spank Jelle Klaasen?  Wright remains the Jimmy White of darts, never managing to land a big one but he is such a quality player and superior to Thursday’s opponent on all known form.

We like the huge prices available about the Scotsman posting something special and are happy to back him to do so.
