Man United v Southampton Past Meetings

This will be the 86th competitive fixture between the two clubs, with United ahead on head-to-head victories with 49 wins to the Saints’ 17.

United triumphed 1-0 at St. Mary’s earlier in the season thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s first half goal, while they won two of the three meetings last season – including the EFL Cup final.

Despite losing 2-0 at Old Trafford last campaign, the Saints had won their previous two visits to the stadium 1-0 and they’ve only lost one of their past four trips to United.

However, Southampton had gone 27 years without tasting victory at Old Trafford, between 1988 and 2015.

Man United v Southampton Stats

After winning their first seven home league matches of the campaign, United have collected only four points at Old Trafford in their last three outings.

Manchester United (43) are the second-highest goalscorers in the division but Southampton (20) are only averaging a goal per game.

United (16 goals conceded) have the third best defensive record in the league while the Saints have not kept a clean sheet in their last ten matches.

Southampton have won only one games and garnered six points in their nine away outings to date – only one team (Swansea) has won fewer points on the road.

Man United v Southampton Team News

United will be without Marouane Fellaini (knee), Eric Bailly (groin), Michael Carrick (heart condition) and Antonio Valencia (hamstring), while Anthony Martial (knee), Matteo Darmian (knock) and Chris Smalling (groin) are all major doubts.

Southampton will have to make do without their top scorer Charlie Austin (hamstring and suspended) who netted in their last win at Old Trafford, while Cedric Soares (ankle) and Ryan Bertrand (hamstring) are also out.

Reason for Man United v Southampton Bets

Southampton have not won any of their last seven games while they’ve won only twice in their last 15 outings – keeping only one clean sheet in that run.

United are also off-colour with successive draws against Leicester and Burnley, alongside a League Cup elimination to Bristol City, meaning they’ve only won seven points in their last five matches.

Jose Mourinho’s side should still have more than enough to see off a Saints side who have collected only two points in their last seven away outings – the worst run of form of any side in the division.

This game should have a lot of goals – United have only one clean sheet in their last nine matches while Southampton’s 5-2 defeat at Tottenham on Boxing Day is a sign of their current form.

Both sides are leaking a lot of goals at the moment and odds of 21/10 of there being four goals or more in this encounter are worth looking into.
