Christmas Hurdle Betting Tip:

  • 2.40pm Kempton Park – Vroum Vroum Mag – at 9/4 with bet365

A brave and sporting decision to run THISTLECRACK in the King George was made last week and last year’s World Hurdle winner now bids to win one of the biggest steeplechases in the land as a novice.

The bookmakers can’t split him and National Hunt legend Cue Card in the Christmas racing clash that everyone is talking about. In a top class field of seven, these two Colin Tizzard trained stablemates stand out and it will be fascinating to see how this three mile contest plays out at 3.15pm at Kempton Park.

Thristlecrack has put in several performances in the last 12 months or so which suggest he could lay claim to being the most talented horse in training. A truly dominant season in the staying hurdle decision was the catalyst for a decision to aim at the Gold Cup to cap his novice chasing campaign.

Three novice chase wins later, he finds himself in the King George with only six horses in front of him and history. Tom Scudamore gets on so well with this eight-year-old and he looks sure to warm to the task on Boxing Day. Cue Card is a special horse, unlike Thistlecrack he’s had 26 starts over fences to date and will be hard to beat.

But the exuberant youth and class of Thistlecrack, along with his clear potential to be a great chaser given his hurdles form, makes him too hard to overlook and he is the bet at around 11/8 with Ladbrokes and Betfair to win the King George VI Chase.

Earlier in the 2.40pm Christmas Hurdle, the Willie Mullins trained VROUM VROUM MAG can get the better of Alan King’s Yanworth and build on her return to action in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle on her seasonal debut.

The seven-year-old mare went down fighting to the race-fit Apples Jade there, but getting 7lb from her rivals in this race – including The New One, Ch’Tibello and My Tent Or Yours – she looks the one to be on at 9/4 with bet365.
