The eagerly anticipated Ebor Festival at York is the pride of the North at this time of year.

Perfectly timed after the Galway and Glorious Goodwood festivities, it is a return of a top class flat racing meeting held over four days on the famous Knavesmire turf. The Betway Great Voltigeur Stakes at 3.00pm on Wednesday is often a stepping stone to the St Leger and other top middle distance races.

This year John Gosden is responsible for the favourite with his son of Frankel, Cracksman, an exciting three-year-old to keep up his consistently good form this season with a massive run under Frankie Dettori. The Epsom Derby third followed up at the Curragh with a solid second in the Irish Derby and he could still have further improvement to come, with this only being his fifth career start.

The main race on day one is the Juddmonte International Stakes at 3.35pm and Richard Hannon’s top three year old Barney Roy looks to build on his unlucky second to Ulysses in the Coral Eclipse last time out. He was very impressive prior to that at Royal Ascot and has to be respected.

York Ebor meeting betting oddsThe return of Churchill could be his downfall though, as Aidan O’Brien’s patience can be rewarded here as the dual Guineas winner steps up to a mile and a quarter for the first time.

The son of Galileo fluffed his lines at Royal Ascot but should be a fresh now and remains a top class colt. If they go very fast early it could bring Cliffs Of Moher into the argument, particularly if there’s a little juice in the ground.

On Friday afternoon at York races, Lady Aurelia Vs Battaash is the race of the day in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at 3.35pm, though the likes of Profitable and Marsha will keep the top two in the York betting honest in a quality race.

Lady Aurelia was electric at Royal Ascot when landing the King’s Stand, but how will she handle York on another day, having been fully primed for June? The Charlie Hills trained Battaash is the pick over the filly, given how impressive his last two victories have been.

The clockwatchers were chirping loud about the three-year-old’s Goodwood win last time out and he looks fairly hard to oppose given his rate of progression this summer. Charlie Hills remains in very good form with the other runners from his quality Newmarket string of horses and his hugely talented son of Dark Angel can light up the Knavesmire.

The feature race on Saturday is of course the £285,000 Betfred Ebor Handicap, a fiercely competitive handicap ran over just shy of one mile and six furlongs. Godolphin are known to throw up the odd blot in the handicap for this particular race.

The Charlie Appleby trained Kidmenever appears to have really strong claims of being in the frame, having run well in defeat in each of his last four starts. Despite not nothing up a win since June of last year, he appears to be improving at the right time. From the Willie Mullins stable, recent Galway scorer Riven Light would have a big chance if opting to make the trip. Keep an out to see if he makes the cut later in the week, and enjoy the Ebor show!
