The first major trophy of the Scottish season is up for grabs on Sunday afternoon, with Aberdeen and Celtic battling for the Betfred Cup (a.k.a. Scottish League Cup) at Hampden Park.

Aberdeen have been the closest challengers to Celtic in recent years, but still come into the Betfred Cup final 10-points adrift of their Glasgow rivals in the Premiership and having played a game more.  If they are to win silverware this season, the domestic cups already look like their only chance to do so.

Celtic have won both Premiership clashes between the two teams this term, winning 4-1 at Celtic Park back in August and then 1-0 at Pittodrie a month ago in what may well have been the game that all but decided the destiny of the domestic title even at that early stage of the campaign.

The Dons did beat Celtic in two out of their four league meetings last season though, so they know they can hold their own against them.  Another factor that may just play in Aberdeen’s favour is that Celtic host Barcelona in the Champions’ League just four days prior to this match and the emotional and physical exertion of that encounter could potentially take its toll.  By contrast, Derek McInnes and his squad will have had a full week to prepare.

Despite Celtic coming out as 1-0 victors the last time these teams met, 11 of the last 14 games between the two would have resulted in a winning bet had you backed both teams to score.  There are usually goals when Aberdeen and Celtic clash.

It’s difficult to go against Celtic in domestic Scottish football as things stand, but a best price of 4/7 to win in 90-minutes looks too short to appeal against the second best team in the country in a cup final.

A better option might be to look at the Highest Scoring Half market and back the second-half.  With these teams knowing each other so well, it could largely be a case of early sparring to begin with, with most of the goal action coming after the break.
