John Higgins to win the UK Snooker Championship 12/1 (13.00) with Boylesports

Snooker Betting Preview

As usual a top-8 ranked player has been placed in each bracket of the 2017 UK snooker draw which contains a massive 128 names. The snooker betting odds look wide open!

Defending Champion and current World Champion Mark Selby is in the very top bracket with No. 2 seed Ding Junhui at the very bottom section.  Therein, conceivably, they could’ve met in the final but Ding has shown inconsistency yet again having been knocked out in the 1st round 6-5 by the world number 130 ranked Leo Fernandez!

But with Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Shaun Murphy, Neil Robertson, John Higgins and a returning to form Mark Williams all in the competition, the likelihood of those ‘top two’ squaring off in the BBC televised final was always a long shot.

Last year’s finalists, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby have shared favouritism at the outset of the competition.  Bookmakers are clearly becoming acutely aware of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s ability to show brilliance – which has been on display in recent weeks with him claiming the English Open and Shanghai Masters – and his capacity for desperate displays which saw him sink, spectacularly, to little known Elliot Slessor at last week’s Northern Ireland Open.  His white flag seemed hoisted after just 30 minutes of play.

Ronnie O’Sullivan always comes with a health warning and while his outright snooker odds of 4/1 is justified, betting on him is unimaginative and also fraught with danger.

Certainly, even with the early stages of the competition all being ‘Best of 11’ frame contests, it’s difficult to predict if the winner will come out of the top dozen in the snooker betting odds tables despite the early season ranking snooker events going to lesser-lights such as:  Ryan Day, Luca Brecel and Michael White.

And the winner is…

So Ronnie O’Sullivan s out on ‘value grounds’ and it is also easy to dismiss Neil Robertson who has not won a ranking event since lifting this trophy in 2015.

Judd Trump has the brilliance but he too is under-priced. In the seven seasons since he burst on to the scene by winning the China Open he has won six ranking tournaments at a rate of around one per-season and he has had his win in 2017 (taking the European Masters).  Even at a top-price (at time of writing) 6/1 on the Betfair Sportsbook offers no value.

Suddenly we are down to two:

Mark Selby, whose 2017 record in ranking events reads:  2R, 4R, 1R, QF, 3R, W (International Championship) and 3R, and the old Scottish stalwart John Higgins.

Veteran Scot our man

John Higgins, who has won the UK Championship three times in the past (1998, 2000, 2010) and finished runner-up twice is our snooker tip.  The veteran led Mark Selby by 10 frames to 7 at one stage of this year’s World Championship and looks to be playing as well as ever – on the understanding the skill levels in snooker are higher than ever.

Winner of the Indian Open in September, the Scotsman with over £7 million in winnings, made the fourth round of the English Open, quarter-final of the International Championship and semi-final of the Shanghai Masters in the last four weeks.

As well as being in decent form the draw has worked out kindly for him.  In the fifth bracket of the UK Championship 2017 the highest ranked player he can meet before the ‘last 16’ is No. 13 Luca Brecel and then, potentially, No. 5 ranked Shaun Murphy in the quarter-finals.

By that stage the 12/1 currently on offer at Boylesports will be long gone and you can cash-out your stakes and ‘free roll’ on his progress thereafter.
