The Champion of Champions, a snooker tournament which features winners of World Snooker events over the preceding 12 months, gets underway this week.  It offers a prize-fund £300,000 of which £100,000 goes to the winner.  The action is broadcast on ITV4.

Remarkably John Higgins, who reeled off three centuries from 7-7 to beat Stuart Bingham 10-7 in the final of the China Championship at the weekend (collecting a £200,000 cheque in the process), is available at 14/1 for this tournament, which will require the ultimate champion to win just four games.

A flight back from China to Coventry, and the Ricoh Arena when the tournament is being held, may jet-lag the Scotsman somewhat but he is not due to play his opening game, against Shaun Murphy, until Thursday.

Stuart Bingham has to play on Tuesday however and possibly deflated by that Chinese defeat we think he will falter against defending Champion of Champions title holder Neil Robertson.

The Australian has played six ranking tournaments this season, winning the Riga Masters and making the semi-final of the World Open and European Masters.  He has only lost in the first round once.

Later in the week we will go ahead and back John Higgins to continue his winning run, this time against Shaun Murphy.  Murphy was a quarter finalist in China last week but he was fortunate to overcome the unknown Yan Bingto 6-5 along the way and only beat Robin Hull 6-4.

Eliminated in three of his last seven ranking events, Murphy has lost 57% of his matches against John Higgins, and the last time this duo met the score-line was whitewashing 6-0.

Mark Selby the outright call on percentages

As for my outright snooker betting tips, such is the state of the modern snooker game with very little between the World’s Top-10, it’s hard to make a confident selection.  But there is no doubting Mark Selby has fared well in the draw with Liang Wenbo and then Mark Allen or Joe Perry his early opponents.

Selby, in addition to winning the World Championship twice in three years, has won two ranking events in 2016, he was a finalist in a third and a semi-finalist in another.  Given those facts Stan James 5/1 quote has to be considered too big for the Jester from Leicester.
