Scotland v England Past Meetings

The Three Lions have been victorious in their last three encounters with Scotland – the most recent being November’s qualifier at Wembley. It was a comfortable 3-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s men – their biggest over Scotland since May 1975.

Scotland v England Stats

England have won eight of their last 10 matches against Scotland. You have to go back to 1999 for the last time the Tartan Army came out on top.

Gareth Southgate’s men are unbeaten in their last 34 international qualifiers, whilst the men in blue have lost just one of their last nine games at Hampden Park.

Seven of England’s last eight goals against Scotland have been headers – all scored by different players.

Scotland Team News

Kieran Tierney will have to wear a gum shield to protect his broken jaw, but that won’t stop him from starting. Leigh Griffiths missed training on Monday due to illness, but he’s fine for Saturday’s match.

England Team News

Southgate has no injury doubts for the match and could choose a similar XI that beat Lithuania in the last qualifier. However, Harry Kane and Gary Cahill are expected to return to the starting line-up.

Reason for Scotland v England Bets

Much will be made of the rivalry between these two nations, but behind all the snappy headlines is a rather important football match. England currently top Group F, having won four of their past five qualifiers and drawing the other. Scotland, meanwhile, sit in fourth place – five points behind the Three Lions but just two behind second-placed Slovakia.

Much has changed in the England ranks since this time last year. On 10 June, Roy Hodgson was in charge, Wayne Rooney was still captain and Gareth Southgate was managing the under 21’s. Twelve months on, a sense of optimism has again crept in among fans and the media.

It was quite the contrast for Gordan Strachan, who looked to be on his way out after a disappointing start to the campaign. Nevertheless, a tenure-saving win against Slovenia dragged his side back into the race for qualification. Whilst March’s victory at Hampden Park was dubbed a ‘must-win’, Saturday’s match has been scaled down to a ‘must-not-get-beaten’.

It’s still hard to look past an away win. The 3-0 showing back in November highlighted the gulf in class between the two nations. Scotland also have their defensive struggles – they’ve kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 competitive matches – which doesn’t bode well against an attacking England line-up.

Back an England win at 7/10 with William Hill. But the men in white have also improved defensively under Southgate – they’re the only team not to concede so far in World Cup qualification.

Adam Lallana has been key in recent matches. He’s been directly involved in four goals in his last five England appearances. Nevertheless, Harry Kane ended the season in emphatic form, so back him to score and England to win at 19/10 with 888sport.
