Cricket Betting: The Ashes Past Form
Over 70 previous Test series, Australia hold a narrow 33-32 lead over England, with there having been five drawn series. Australia have won 14 of the 35 Ashes series played in England, although they haven’t come home with the urn since 2001 when they won the series 4-1.
No fewer than eight of the last nine Ashes series have been won by the host nation. Familiarity with playing conditions in terms of weather and in having pitches prepared to favour the home team’s bowling attack tends to be a significant factor in Test cricket.
Although a different form of cricket, England should go into the Ashes on a high following their recent victory at the Cricket World Cup. However, they lost some of the momentum with a far from convincing performance in the subsequent victory over Ireland in a one-off Test match.
So who will win The Ashes 2019?
Neither team looks particularly convincing with the bat. England’s top order remains a major concern, with Surrey team-mates Jason Roy and Rory Burns set to open and Joe Denly pencilled in at No. 3 in the 1st Test it would appear.
England’s leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson, who missed the Ireland Test with a calf injury, should be back to lead the bowling attack at Edgbaston. This series will almost certainly be Anderson’s Ashes farewell and he will unquestionably want to go out on a high.
The great hope following Anderson is Jofra Archer, but although he is also in the squad for the 1st Test, he has just returned from a side strain and would appear to be an unnecessary risk to play him if he isn’t 100% fit. There is more able seam bowling in his absence, in the likes of Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. That strength in depth could prove decisive for England.
Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will all make their Australia Test returns in the Ashes following on from their ball-tampering bans. The former pair will be crucial to their batting.
The Ashes 2019 Series Betting
In terms of the Ashes 2019 series betting, England are 10/11 with bet365*, the draw is 7/1 with Paddy Power (a drawn series would result in the Aussies retaining the Ashes) and Australia are 6/4 with Betway.
This looks like a series that could ebb and flow, but home advantage gives England the edge and a 3-2 series win for Joe Root’s boys looks worth an Ashes cricket bet for 2019 at fair odds of 7/1 with Betfair.
In the Top England Batsman betting odds, given the aforementioned concerns about those set to come in before him, Joe Root looks the pick at 9/4 with bet365.*
Mitchell Starc was the top bowler at the World Cup with 27 wickets and he looks a good bet to lead the way for Australia in the Ashes at 7/2 with Coral as their top bowler.
