2019 Champion Hurdle Betting Preview
The first of four main Championship races is the Unibet Champion Hurdle which is the 3.30pm race on the opening day of the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, the fourth race on the card. On paper it should be a classic. Refraining from calling Apples Jade, a ‘young pretender’, the Irish raider will be attempting to lift the crown from Buveur D’Air who is seeking a hat-trick in the two-mile feature race.
Cheltenham is almost here 🙌
Who are you backing in the Champion Hurdle?
— Ladbrokes (@Ladbrokes) February 27, 2019
Clash Of The Titans
Their form-figures read like boxing stats: Buveur D’Air is 14: 12-1-1 That is a remarkable 12 wins, a second and a third from 14 starts over hurdles. Apples Jade is 20: 14-4-2 (14 wins, four runner-up spots and a third.)
Despite their impressive racing records, both have been beaten here at Cheltenham racecourse. Apples Jade worst career finish, at betting odds of 1/2, came in last season’s Mares Hurdle and Buveur D’Air ‘s sole third place came in the 2016 Supreme Novice Hurdle.
There’s some tiny fractions available here and there but, essentially, the Cheltenham bookies cannot separate this pair offering 2/1 apiece. But is it really a two horse race? Those shrewd bookies say NO and the Irish trained Laurina, top-priced 4/1 (Betfair), has a legitimate chance according to them.
New Customers can get Buveur Dair at an enhanced 50/1 to win Champion Hurdle. Max Stake £1. Winnings paid in free bets. valid for 7 days, only deposits with cards/Paypal count. Exchange and multiple bets excluded. Full T&Cs Apply. 18+BeGambleAware
Willie Mullins’ fine record and two contenders
Like Apples Jade, Laurina is a mare. And unlike the established star Laurina’s trainer Willie Mullins has won the Champion Hurdle before. Not once, or twice but four times in the past eight years with Annie Power, Hurricane Fly and Faugheen.

Only one other horse in the race is priced 12/1 or less – and that’s important as nine of the last ten winners were – and that is another Willie Mullins’ inmate, Sharjah (12/1 William Hill). Owned, like Annie Power and Faugheen, by the famed American Rich Ricci she has landed her last two starts by big margins and could be improving. But her overall profile is underwhelming. She has never won on the flat in eight starts and her hurdle record shows five wins from 12 starts.
Verdict: Our Champion Hurdle Betting Prediction
Sharjah has beaten some old regressive sorts in winning her last two races and does not look classy enough to contain some of these.
All of Laurina’s winning has been done on soft ground and it is unlikely to be soft at the Festival. Furthermore her last five wins have come in distances in excess of 2m 1f.
So the principles are the ones to be on and with BUVEUR D’AIR doing the Champion Hurdle ‘job’ twice before and his trainer being responsible for See You Then who won the race three times in the 1980’s, he looks like the one to be on to make some Cheltenham history this year.
