Everything may already have been decided in terms of who finishes where and qualifies for what in Champions’ League Group C, but any game between English and Scottish clubs is never going to be meaningless.
The Citizens are already assured of finishing runners-up to Barcelona, with their better head-to-head record ensuring that Borussia Mönchengladbach can’t overhaul them. Likewise, the Germans superior head-to-head record over Celtic means that even were the Scottish champions to draw level with Gladbach on points, it would be the Bundesliga team that claims the Europa League spot.
The reverse fixture at Celtic Park in late September was an end-to-end encounter, with City battling back from a goal down on three occasions to secure a 3-3 draw. It was also a game that kick-started a mini decline in City’s fortunes after an impressive start to the season under Pep Guardiola.
Manchester City will go into this game with a point to prove after being ruthlessly picked off by Chelsea in Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League defeat at the Etihad Stadium. This game represents a swift opportunity to get back on track.
Celtic didn’t have it all their own way Saturday lunchtime in Scottish Premiership action either, with them having to fight all the way in coming from 2-0 and 3-2 down to eventually see off Motherwell 4-3 at Fir Park. Unlike City, there is no realistic competition for Celtic domestically and they are already eight points clear at the top of the table with three games in hand over both of their closest rivals.
With an important Premier League game at Leicester City on Saturday, Guardiola could rotate his squad to some degree here. Even so, the City squad is so deep that it should still see off a Celtic team that, for all their spirit, simply can’t compare in terms of quality.
Manchester City are a best price of 4/11 (1.36) to win this game, but backing a City victory with over 3.5 goals in the match could provide some additional value in a match featuring two teams that are both better going forward than they are at defending.
