DERBY COUNTY v WIGAN ATHLETIC PREDICTIONS, BETTING TIPS & MATCH PREVIEW
Saturday 31st December, 3pm, Pride Park Stadium
Struggling Wigan travel to a resurgent Derby County in a clash between two sides with vastly contrasting form. Warren Joyce’s men sit second-from-bottom in the standings, losing each of their last five league outings include a Boxing Day defeat at the hands of basement club Rotherham United.
The Rams seven-match winning streak was halted a week before Christmas with a draw at play-off chasing Fulham but the appointment of former England manager Steve McClaren in early October has transformed their fortunes from a side struggling for goals and wins to one who look capable of mounting a promotion challenge.
County have won each of their last two meetings with the Latics including a 1-0 win at the start of the month courtesy of Bradley Johnson’s early strike.
Derby County v Wigan Athletic Winner Odds:
Derby County v Wigan Athletic Anytime Goalscorer Odds:
Tom Ince – 13/8 – 32Red – Derby’s top scorer this season has netted eight goals already this campaign and has been the star player in their recent winning run
Matej Vydra – 17/10 – Coral, Betfair – the £12.5m summer signing has struggled for goals since moving to Pride Park, scoring just twice in 18 appearances to date.
Darren Bent – 7/4 – bet365 – the former England international scored from the penalty spot in Tuesday’s encounter with Birmingham but it was only the 32-year-old’s third of the campaign.
Will Grigg – 10/3 – 32Red – The Northern Irish striker has scored five times in the second tier having his 25 goals in Wigan’s promotion season and remains the biggest goal threat in a team struggling to create – they are the league’s joint lowest goal scorers but he is the most likely to find the net.
Derby County v Wigan Athletic Betting Tips:
Draw – 61/20 – MarathonBet – Wigan will have had an extra day’s rest going into this fixture, which is crucial at this time of year and have won each of their last three visits to Derby. They will be firm underdogs, but this represents great value.
Under 1.5 goals – 49/20 – MarathonBet – Wigan are the leagues joint lowest scorers while Derby have struggled to create too, netting the same figure as bottom-of-the-table Rotherham.
Derby will be heavy favourites with form and home advantage, and whilst an away win is unlikely there is fantastic value in the draw. It promises to be a game of few goals, with defensives on top which may favour a counter-attacking Latics.
