Epsom Oaks 2021 (4.30pm, Friday 4th June)
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Santa Barbara (6/4) heads the 2021 Oaks betting odds, having finished fourth in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. She’s closely followed in the betting by stablemate Snowfall, Roger Varian’s Teona and Zeyaadah and Noon Star for Sir Michael Stoute.
The mile and a half contest also features the well-backed Divinely, the 1,000 Guineas runner-up Saffron Beach and the recent Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain.
Here are a few Oaks trends to bear in mind when making your final selections:
- 7 of the last 14 favourites were unplaced
- Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the race 8 times.
- The horse from stall 2 has been placed in 7 of the last 20 runnings.
- The average winning SP in the last 20 runnings is 11/1.
My money will be on the Cheshire Oaks runner-up Zeyaadah at 11/2 with bet365*. Roger Varian believes she wasn’t quite ready for Chester so will definitely have come on for that run.

Epsom Derby 2021 (4.30pm, Saturday 5th June)
One of the highlights of the annual racing calendar is the Cazoo-sponsored Classic which goes off at 4.30pm on Saturday 6th June.
Strong in the Epsom Derby 2021 betting market is Bolshoi Ballet (13/8 bet365*), who took up the favourites mantle for the Derby following his victory in the Derrinstown Derby Trial. He looks the best pick of the Aidan O’Brien bunch. Stablemate High Definition (4/1 bet365*), who finished third in the Dante Stakes on his seasonal return, looks like a worthy contender however.
The well-bred John Leeper would be a poignant winner too for Ed Dunlop, given that he is named after the trainer’s late father John.
There is plenty more strength and depth in the contest with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Mac Swiney making the trip over, plus Dante scorer Hurricane Lane and Lingfield Derby Trial winner Third Realm more than ready to play leading roles.
Epsom Derby 2021 Odds via bet365*
- 13/8 – Bolshoi Ballet
- 4/1 – High Definition
- 11/2 – Mac Swiney
- 8/1 – John Leeper
- 10/1 – Mohaafeth
- 10/1 – Hurricane Lane
- 14/1 – Third Realm
- 20/1 – Van Gogh
- 33/1 – Sir Lamorak
- 33/1 – Youth Spirit
Here are a few betting trends for the Epsom Derby
Based on the last ten runnings of the race you are looking for a runner that ticks most of these boxes…
- A horse trading in the first three in the betting priced 7/1 or less.
- A winner of the Dante or the 2000 Guineas at a 3-y-o.
- A horse that finished first or second on its proceeding start.
- A horse trained by Aidan O’Brien.
- A winner of a Group race before.
- Raced no more than 5 times before.
- Ran in the last five weeks.
With Ryan Moore highly likely to side with Bolshoi Ballet my money will be going on him at odds of 13/8 with bet365*. I’m not usually a favourite backer but this son of Galileo completely fits the profile of your typical O’Brien Derby winner.
