Free tips FA Cup: Middlesbrough v Man City (Saturday, 12.15pm)

The first of this season’s FA Cup quarter-finals see Premier League strugglers Middlesbrough face in-form Manchester City at the Riverside stadium.

All ties will be played to a finish on the day, with extra time and penalties if required. We take you through our predictions and betting tips for the fixture…

Middlesbrough v Man City Past meetings

City’s recent record against Boro is surprisingly patchy and they crashed to a shock 0-2 defeat at home to the same opposition – then in the Championship – in 2015.

Their only meeting since was a clash at the Etihad stadium back in November this season, when a Martin de Roon stoppage time equaliser won a point for the visitors after Sergio Aguero’s first-half strike.

The Manchester side have won only two of their last six head-to-head’s, but one of those was a 1-0 victory at the Riverside in a 3rd round FA Cup clash in 2010.

Seven years ago, City suffered their worst defeat in the modern era as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s last game in charge saw them lose 8-1 at the North East side.

Middlesbrough v Man City Stats

Pep Guardiola’s side have won more games (10) and collected more points (30) away from home compared to any other side in the division, and are yet to draw on the road.

Middlesbrough are the lowest scorers in the division, finding the net only 19 times in 27 matches – at least five less than any other side.

Middlesbrough v Man City Team News

City will be without long-term absentees Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan, while defender Vincent Kompany is also a fitness doubt.

Middlesbrough will be without defensive duo Daniel Ayala (hamstring) and Calum Chambers (knee).

Reason for Middlesbrough v Man City Bets

It is not yet clear if Aitor Karanka will still be in a job by the time this match comes around, with rumours that club owners have lost patience with a conservative style of play and with relegation fears now very real due to them slipping into the drop zone, any turnaround may be too late.

Boro have won only one in 13 in the league and despite three cup wins at home to lower league opposition, they have failed to generate any momentum.

The only solace they may have here is they have only lost one home game in their last eight across all competitions, but this City side are unbeaten in eight, drawing seven.

Guardiola’s team are in fine form and all logic – the quality of the sides, respective form and momentum – points to an away victory inside ninety minutes.

City’s weakness is clear – their reckless backline – but Boro just cannot create clear-cut opportunities, never mind score goals and without possession that trend should continue here.

Karanka often oversees low-scoring games and there have only been six goals go in at both ends in his side’s last four home games, and 27/25 for under 2.5 goals in this one feels like a safe winner.
