Free tips F1 Betting Preview & Tips: Few Changes for 2018 Formula 1 Season

New F1 season starts on 25th March 2018. Full F1 calendar / fixtures are below.

Formula One Betting Preview & Tips for the new 2018 F1 Season

Apart from the introduction of the ‘halo’ or inverted ‘flip-flop’ as some people are calling the cockpit safety device, and the banishing of ‘grid girls’, scantily dressed or otherwise, little is set to change in the forthcoming Formula 1 racing season.

Formula One Betting Tips

Felipe Massa has finally retired, being replaced by Russian Sergey Sirotkin who is a second driver that is bringing millions into the Williams team. It’s a team that is being run like a business and the two rich kids with cheque books have a combined age of just 41!

Toro Rosso, introduced Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley towards the end of the 2017 season and that pairing will be the teams full-time drivers in 2018. The only other change is the introduction of Charles Leclerc who replaces Pascal Wehrlein at Sauber.

Recommended F1 Bets for 2018 Season:

  • Mercedes: Constructor’s Championship 3/4 with SunBets
  • Charles Leclerc: Drivers Championship 5000/1 (each-way) with BetStars (small stakes)
  • Marcus Ericsson Drivers Championship 5000/1 (each-way) with BetStars (small stakes)

New Ferrari power could work the oracle

Sauber struggled last season with old-spec engines but in 2018, despite being rebranded as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team, they will have the use of the latest Ferrari engines, gearboxes and rear suspensions.

This upgrade in equipment could see a dramatic upturn in fortunes and catch F1 bookmakers unawares.  Sauber achieved a seasons best of 8th in the Spanish Grand Prix last season, it was the team’s only top-10 finish.

But that form only goes to make a 5,000/1 Leicester/Premiership style fairy-tale possible and I’m having 50p each-way F1 bets on their drivers just in case.

Change at the top?

But with limited changes to the F1 regulations in 2018 – primarily regarding tyre compounds, the removal of a few wings and fins and teams having the use of just three engines during the season before penalties are incurred – it is hard to envisage any major change to the F1 pecking order.

In 2016 and 2017 the Ferrari looked the car to beat in pre-season testing and indeed it was during the opening few races of the last campaign – Sebastian Vettel claimed three wins and three seconds from the first six races and was odds-on favourite to lift the Championship title.

But Sebastian Vettel was to clinch just two more victories during the year and his teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, could only claim a couple of runner-up spots throughout the season.  And a year which started off with such promise for the Italian squad, ultimately ended up as a major disappointment.

Wing man shortcomings means Mercedes can claim Constructors

Whereas Mercedes prides itself on giving its driver pairing equal opportunities and both pilots are top-drawer, Ferrari has a long history of employing one champion and a wing-man who is woefully short on class in comparison.

Since Raikkonen re-joined Ferrari in 2014 he has failed to win a race in 79 attempts and has claimed five silver medals.  On the other hand, Sebastian Vettel joined the team a year later but his subsequent 60 race starts have yielded eight race wins and a dozen runner-up spots.

So even if you are of the opinion Sebastian Vettel can edge out Lewis Hamilton this year, the Mercedes team, made up of Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, who enjoyed three race wins from his 13 2017 podium finishes, look the far better option in the F1 Constructors betting market.

Of course we are dismissing the chances of the Red Bull team who finished third in the 2017 Constructors Championship and Force India who took fourth.  As impressive as their finishing positions were, it has to be pointed out Mercedes scored almost twice the points than Red Bull (668 vs 368) while the Force India team claimed almost half as many again, 187.  But, without the aforementioned changes to F1 regulations, just where will improvements for these two come from?

F1 Betting Clues – McLaren Power

Where we can expect to see some real improvement is in the McLaren garage. The once all conquering team has had a dire three seasons propelled by Honda engines and for 2018 they will be using Renault power-plants.

Given their resources it is entirely possible McLaren can hit the track running and immediately challenge the Renault powered Red Bull team (albeit their engines are badged ‘Tag Heuer’) and the Renault works team.

The Formula 1 betting odds compilers certainly have faith and it is noteworthy that they make McLaren’s star driver, Fernando Alonso, just 16/1 (top price at Stan James) for Driver’s Championship glory.  That’s the same price as Mercedes No. 2 Valtteri Bottas and considerably shorter than Kimi Raikkonen who can be backed at 33/1.
