Grand National 2017 Betting Preview

grand national betting

The 2017 Randox Health Grand National may have a new sponsor but little else has changed about the race which was first officially staged in 1839 and won by the aptly named ‘Lottery’.

Once again 40 runners will head to the start for this year’s race and considering what a fantastic Cheltenham Festival Irish runners enjoyed in mid-March, there is plenty of reasons to believe it will be an Irish-trained runner which returns victorious before 70,000 racegoers on the second Saturday in April.

Unsurprisingly all the major Grand National betting firms are offering prices on the 2017 Grand National and have done since the horses crossed the line a year ago when the Irish-trained 33/1 shot ‘Rule The World’ prevailed.

This is, after all, the biggest betting event of the season and one which will have major ramifications on the end-of-year balance sheets of the bookmaking firms.

Come race day all traditional ‘shop bookmakers’ and online sportsbooks will be showering their customers with free Grand National free bet offers, money back concessions and all sorts of enhancements and bonuses.

In fact, in an unprecedented move, three major online bookmakers, Paddy Power, Stan James and bet365 have introduced ‘Non Runner No Bet’ terms to their ante-post Grand National betting market weeks before the big race begins.

‘Non Runner No Bet’ terms represent a huge advantage for punters especially as the major firms also offer a ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’ stipulation and the near formality that all final declarations will start at an SP significantly shorter than what is currently available.

But just who will land the big race?

1988 Grand National winner Rhyme ‘n Reason, 1999 winner Bobbyjo and 2006 winner Numbersixvalverde were all previous winners of the Irish Grand National and so ‘Rogue Angel’, who won the 2016 Irish Grand National, has to be of immediate interest.  He can be backed at 33/1 with Skybet who are one of very few firms offering each-way terms of places 1-2-3-4-5.

However, ‘Thunder and Roses’, who won the Irish National in 2014 is also amongst the entries and if you want to support him you best go to Bet Victor who are top-priced 40/1.

Remarkably it has been 83 years since a Gold Cup winner landed a Grand National so, as tempting as it may be, another Irish trained runner, Lord Windermere, who landed the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup, has to be passed-over.

Another great race as pointer to a future Grand National winner is the Becher Chase.  Recent winners who went on to land racing’s greatest Steeple Chase are Earth Summit, Amberleigh House and Silver Birch.

As the Beecher Chase is run at Aintree and uses the Grand National fences its strength as a form-guide is clear to see and this season’s winner, ‘Vieux Lion Rouge’ is trading as the current 10/1 favourite for the big race.

Trained by David Pipe, who landed the 2008 National with Comply or Die, ‘Vieux Lion Rouge’ is only an 8-year-old and horses of this age don’t have a great record in the race, winning on average, once every ten years.

However, 2017 does see 8-year-old better represented than normal with ‘Definitely Red’ another 8-year-old at the top of the betting.  14/1 second favourite with most firms, the Brian Ellison-trained runner has some excellent form figures alongside his name: 1117/1211P/2122F1-131U1 and his final victory was in Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Chase a recognised Grand National trial in which he finished 14-lengths ahead of ‘The Last Samuri’ who was last year’s favourite and ultimate runner-up.

To be fair ‘The Last Samuri’ was making his seasonal debut on this occasion so he may well have been somewhat ‘under-cooked’ and he was also conceding 12lb to his rival on soft going.  Things will be different in the National itself and with this horse trained the Grand National as his sole target, we like his chances a lot.

But the very real prospect of an Irish-trained winner cannot be dismissed so we have to hedge our bets with the J.P. McManus owned ‘Cause of Causes’.  9-years-old, like seven of the last 20 winners, this candidate is trained by Gordon Elliot who had such a tremendous Cheltenham Festival.

He is a horse in form winning the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival by a wide-margin and while that success came as a consequence of his falling to a lowly handicap rating which he can take advantage of in the Aintree showpiece.

Vitally Gordon Elliot used Cheltenham’s Cross Country Race as a prep for his 2007 Grand National winner, Silverbirch, which was the horse that put the trainer on the map and provided him with his first ever winner when landing the 4-mile-4-furlong contest.
