Hungarian GP should suit McLaren
When it comes to this weekend’s F1 race at Hungary the best place to look for form is Monaco as both venues sees cars race with a lot of downforce (wing-levels pushing cars on to the race track).
There are not the unforgiving walls and barriers – which invariably see severe crashes at Monaco – but Hungary is also tight and windy, an exceptionally difficult place to overtake.
King Carlos for a top-6
From a betting viewpoint the win and place markets are all very much in line with recent results, trends and course form. So the first outstanding bet/price is Carlos Sainz to finish in the top-6, just like he did in Monaco.
His McLaren team have fought themselves into fourth position in the constructor championship standings and they are improving race-on-race. A podium position before the season’s end is no impossibility.
In addition to his sixth in Monaco, Sainz has finished within the top-6 three times during the past five race starts so he and his car are no one-trick pony. Ultimately he is over-priced for another top-6 finish at 5/2 with Bet365, BetVictor and William Hill.
Go under the winning margin line
As overtaking is more impossible than improbable this race (like Monaco again) often sees cars backed-up like a slow moving North Circular. The thought process is ‘why race when leading’ – instead ‘control the race from the front without the fear of being overtaken’.
It’s noteworthy this Hungary F1 race was won by a second or less in 2007, 2012 and 2017. The winning margin in 2016 was only 1.9sec and, combined with 2019 stats which has seen five of the 11 race winners score by less than 4.2sec, it means you have to love BetVictor’s 5/4 about a winning margin of less than 4sec on Sunday.
No need for a pace car, so have a safety bet
Also based on historical stats, oppose the theory that a Safety Car will be needed. It has only been called into action here five times in the past 15 years and five times during 2019 (we have had eleven races to date).
It’s hard to see how the bookmakers make it an odds on shot to be needed this weekend – unlike German last week there is no rain forecast – but ours is not to question, simply take advantage of their mistakes.
