It’s the first El Clásico of the season on Saturday, the clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid that’s probably the most eagerly anticipated game anywhere in the world as far as club football is concerned.
Barca are six-points adrift of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga going into the match and, even at this relatively early stage of the season, it’s difficult to believe that they would be able to retain their title were they to lose at the Camp Nou on Saturday.
Barcelona are a team that seems to lack cohesion at present and is increasingly heavily reliant on their individual talents in games.
Real Madrid are unbeaten in 32 matches in all competitions following Wednesday’s 6-1 Copa del Rey win at home to Cultural Leonesa and are closing in on the club record of 34 matches without defeat set under Leo Beenhakker in the 1988/89 season. This might not be the most attractive team in Real’s history, but they can’t be faulted for their work-rate and team ethic.
The highly influential Andrés Iniesta should be available for Barca after injury and defender Samuel Umtiti is also back in training. Jordi Alba looks likely to be sidelined though. As for Real Madrid, an ankle injury means that Gareth Bale is now a long-term absentee alongside Toni Kroos and Alvaro Morata.
In last season’s games, Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win at the Bernabeu just over a year ago, with Los Merengues gaining revenge with a 2-1 win at Camp Nou in April.
You would expect a response after last week’s highly fortuitous 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad, with Gerard Piqué admitting that his team hadn’t competed. The Blaugrana are certainly vulnerable and they need to rediscover their passing game and for individual talents, Luis Suarez and Neymar, to find some form.
Real Madrid will be happy to sit back and frustrate Barcelona, whilst trying to hit on the counter-attack so, assuming we see some fight from Luis Enrique’s team, a Barca win with under 3.5 goals has some appeal here.
