COVENTRY v BOLTON PREDICTIONS, BETTING TIPS & MATCH PREVIEWS
Monday, 2nd January 2017, 3pm. Ricoh Arena
Many still associate both these clubs with the top flight of English football but off-field turmoil in recent years have hit them more than most.
Coventry face the real threat of relegation to the fourth tier as their problems and instability show no signs of being temporarily forgotten with results on the pitch but Bolton Wanderers are well-placed to mount a strong promotion challenge back to the Championship as they aim to make it only one season at this level.
Zac Clough’s strike was enough for the Trotters to win the November meeting at the Reebok – the two’s first competitive meeting for 18 seasons, after the Sky Blues won 5-1 at the same ground in January 1998.
Coventry are in crisis and that defeat was in the midst of a seven-game losing streak to make their season look particularly bleak despite the recent appointment of Russell Slade.
Phil Parkinson’s men are fairing significantly better – notching up ten victories in eleven league outings between October and December, while they’ve won eleven of their last thirteen overall.
- Coventry 10/3 – various

- Bolton 10/11 – BetStars, William Hill
Anytime scorer odds
Gary Madine 3/2 – SkyBet – Wanderers main striker and focal point, has only found the net three times this campaign but is a constant threat and trusted by Parkinson.
Zac Clough 3/2 – SkyBet – Bolton’s top scorer this season with four goals despite injury limiting him to just eleven appearances.
Marvin Sordell 23/10 – Betfair – the former England Under 21 scorer has scored seven times this season (four in the league) and is City’s main threat, been a success since a summer move from Colchester, these odds are strong value.
Daniel Agyei 12/5 – Betfair – the 19-year-old has netted five goals since his loan move from Burnley, a powerful, pacey forward who cauces defences problems.
Coventry v Bolton betting tips
Under 2.5 goals at 1 – various – Coventry have the best defensive record of any of the division’s bottom nine but only Oldham have scored fewer. Bolton have the league’s meanest defence but have scored 16 fewer than Scunthorpe.
Marvin Sordell 23/10 – Betfair – City’s main attacking threat and if they find joy, he’s likely to be a part of it and whilst it’s foolish to have confidence in the Sky Blues, these odds are tempting value.
Bolton should win but it won’t be comfortable – both teams rely heavily on their strong defences which tend to lead to low-scoring outcomes.
