Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain have been the dominant forces in French football in the 21st century, with Lyon winning seven consecutive titles soon after the turn of the millennium and PSG having been crowned Ligue 1 champions in each of the last four seasons.
Last season was one of absolute dominance from PSG, as they cantered to the title by an incredible 31 points. Lyon were their nearest challengers, although in terms of points they were closer to relegation than winning the title. On the plus side, Lyon did hand out one of the only two league defeats PSG suffered last season, with a 2-1 victory at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
It’s not been quite so easy for PSG this term but, although they started the current campaign relatively slowly, they’ve taken 16 points out of a possible 18 from their last six games and are beginning to look like their old selves again. Defensively they’ve been as rock solid as ever, conceding just seven goals in 13 league games to date, including just a single goal in those last six matches.
Lyon’s form has been patchy this season, although they are now up to 5th in the table (having dropped a place following Rennes win on Friday evening) on the back of three consecutive wins.
This game will also see Ligue 1’s two leading marksmen going head-to-head, with PSG’s Edinson Cavani’s 11 goals leaving him one ahead of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette as things stand. The problem for Lyon boss Bruno Génésio is that Lacazette aside, his team doesn’t have a great deal more goal threat.
PSG have been particularly solid defensively early on in matches this season, having only conceded two first-half goals in 13 matches. If they can nullify the Lyon attack early on, their midfield could start to take a stranglehold on the game.
It’s tempting to go for the away win here, but PSG had a tough game away to Arsenal in the week and Lyon will have a big, vocal crowd backing them. Backing under 2.5 goals could be the best option in this one.
