Thursday Night Football – New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns take on the NY Jets at the FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday evening local time, in a game between two teams whom it’s safe to assume won’t be contesting Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Browns haven’t won a game in over 600 days, dating back to Christmas Eve 2016, and have registered just two home victories since October of 2015. However, they did at least manage to secure a 21-21 draw against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first week of this season. They also had plenty of opportunities to secure a win when going down 21-18 at the New Orleans Saints last weekend.
Despite an opening 48-17 win on the road at the Detroit Lions, this is a limited Jets team and Sam Darnold is a rookie QB still learning his trade.
One factor that needs to be taken into consideration here is that the Jets opened their season on a Monday night, so this will be their third game in 11 days. It could just be enough of an edge to help secure the Browns that long awaited victory and they can be backed -3 on the Point Spread.
Recommended Pick: Point Spread – Cleveland Browns -3 @ 20/23 with bet365*
Sunday – New Orleans Saints @ Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons (1-1) host the New Orleans Saints (1-1) at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons have won five of their last six home games. QB Matt Ryan is completing 62 percent of his passes for 523 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Ryan also has one or fewer touchdown passes in each of his last eight games.
Saints’ QB Drew Brees is completing 81.3 percent of his passes for 682 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions. Brees has two or more touchdown passes in five of his last nine games. Michael Thomas has 28 catches, the most through the first two games in team history.
This is a tough call, but home advantage and a generally more impressive start to the season makes the Falcons the pick on the Point Spread -3 in this one.
Recommended Pick: Point Spread – Atlanta Falcons -3 @ 19/20 with Betfair
Sunday – Los Angeles Chargers @ Los Angeles Rams
It’s the Battle of LA between the Rams and the Chargers at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams are 2-0 at this stage for the first time since 2001, when they played in the Super Bowl and they are now the favourite to win Super Bowl LIII with most bookmakers. They’ve seen off the Oakland Raiders 33-13 on the road and then the Arizona Cardinals 34-0 to date. Jared Goff has thrown for 587 yards of total offense with 3 touchdowns and an interception on 64.6% passing.
The Chargers are currently 1-1, although whether winning 31-20 at the hapless Buffalo Bills last weekend warrants much in the way of encouragement for the task ahead against the Rams is open to question. They started with a 38-28 loss at home to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Rams have to be the pick here, although with both teams having plenty of talent on offense, it might also be worth looking at the Overs at 48 on the Total Points.
Recommended Pick: Total Points – Over 48 @ 19/20 with Betfair
Sunday – New England Patriots @ Detroit Lions
The New England Patriots go to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday evening.
The Lions started the season with a disastrous 48-17 reversal at home to the NY Jets, although they improved considerably in their 30-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week. Even so, new coach Matt Patricia is still 0-2.
The Patriots went down 31-20 at the Jacksonville Jaguars a week ago, so will be seeking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since the end of the 2015 season.
This is actually the third time in five seasons that the Patriots are 1-1, but after each of the previous two occasions (2014 and 2017), they went on to reach the Super Bowl.
Another positive for the Patriots is that they have won six of their last eight road games, while Tom Brady is completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 511 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
Another big factor here is that Patriots coach Bill Belichick will be keen to get one over his former assistant coach and defensive coordinator Patricia. The Patriots should prevail without too many problems and can overcome a Point Spread of -6.5 to do so.
Recommended Pick: Point Spread – New England Patriots -6.5 @ 7/8 with 888sport
Monday Night Football – Pittsburgh Steelers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Pittsburgh Steelers travel to the Raymond James Stadium to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday evening.
The Bucs have started the new season in surprisingly good form (2-0) with victories over the New Orleans Saints (48-40) and defending Super Bowl champions, Philadelphia Eagles (27-21).
In addition, journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown four TD passes in both of those games and is averaging 13.4 yards per attempt, which is 2.85 more than the next-highest passer (Patrick Mahomes).
For their part, it’s not been a great start to the new season for the Steelers (0-1-1), who have tied one game (21-21 away to the Cleveland Browns) and lost another (42-37 at home to the Kansas City Chiefs). In addition, they are still missing dangerous running back Le’Veon Bell and they have been a mess defensively.
This is a tough one to call, as neither team is performing as was anticipated at this early stage of the season. The momentum is with the Buccaneers though and they have to be the pick on the Point Spread +1.5 in this one on that basis.
