Lewis Hamilton to Roll On While Others May Struggle at New Portuguese Venue
Won seven didn’t, with valid excuse, win four.
That’s Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 Formula 1 record and consequently he is un-opposable in this weekend’s 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix despite the race coming from a venue which has never staged an F1 race before. Read on for our Portuguese Grand Prix tips below – we think we have found some good bets for this weekend…
Portuguese Grand Prix Tips & Preview
The Portuguese GP was last staged in 1996 in Estoril but this weekend the race returns with a new venue, the Algarve International Circuit. Many parts of this track are fast, flowing and undulating so technically it should be similar to Austria.
That surely won’t stop Lewis Hamilton, in terms of race wins, becoming the most successful driver the sport has ever had. From this weekend every race win will see him raise the bar higher and higher – surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories.

Safety in Numbers
Talking of ‘stopping’, this circuit does have run-off areas but they are flanked by gravel traps which are reportedly deep enough to beach most cars. These will increase the chance of the Safety Car being called into action – which it has done for so many races this season.
Interestingly the Tuscan Grand Prix was the first race of 2020 staged at a ‘virgin F1 venue’ and it saw two race stopping red-flag incidents causing the use of a safety car and giving us very small finishing numbers – just 12.
With no track data to work from it is entirely possible we will have yet more carnage on Sunday. Consequently we think it is entirely possible a quarter of the starting line-up will not be classified as race finishers.
Lando Norris for a sixth Top-six
But our headline Formula One bet this week has to be Lando Norris to finish in the top-6 of the race.

The 20-year-old McLaren driver suffered a rare retirement at the last race weekend but he has accumulated five top-6 finishes (from 11 races) this term. His best result was a third placed finish in Austria which, as we have previously said, could be a technically similar circuit to this venue.
Similarly Daniiel Kvyat is even-money for a top-10 (a ‘points finish) – he’s achieved that in three of his last four starts and is another with a 5/11 record in 2020. It makes him a sound bet.
