Premier League Darts could kick-off with a beaten ‘jolly’
Ladbrokes are top-priced 4/6 about Peter Wright beating Simon Whitlock in Thursday night’s opening Unibet Premier League game and we are opposing the ‘jolly’ in the first of this week’s Premier League Darts betting tips.
The bookies are probably of the same opinion as us, whereby they consider the Scotsman is way too inconsistent to be seriously considered as banker material. As an added jack-in-the-box, Simon Whitlock can pop up at the most unlikely times. He was 6/1 to beat Gary Anderson last week but did so in convincing fashion too.
When inconsistency meets jack-in-the-box, back the handicap
Wright has only won three Premier League games this year, he has forced a draw five times though. Given there is little between this unpredictable duo and they drew when they last met in the league, backing Whitlock to win on bet365’s handicap looks prudent.
You can back the Aussie with a 2.5 leg start which means any win, a draw and even a 7-5 defeat would be good enough to make this 5/6 shot a winner.
Can Rob Cross nail it?
It is always hard opposing Michael van Gerwen but there are good grounds to oppose the Dutchman tonight. Firstly he is too short in the darts betting odds, secondly he has not been his confident self in recent times.
At 5/1 Betfair are hanging a big carrot out to Rob Cross fans, most firms go just 4/1. The reigning world champion is another that has been a little inconsistent throughout the league but when he is on song he is a handful for anyone. Not forgetting MVG has won just one of his last four Premier League Darts matches, that price to too much of a temptation for me.
Michael Smith’s beaten them all before
The firms can barely split Michael Smith and Daryl Gurney. But given Smith beat Gurney when they last met in the league and he has beaten every player in the competition with the exception of the ‘big three’ (Rob Cross, MVG and Gary Anderson) we think he will prevail against the Northern Irish player.
Gurney showed improved form during late March into April but this has tapered off (as has his exceptional 180 scoring) and he has won just one of his last four. That was against Simon Whitlock who was massively out of form averaging just 85 on the night.
There’s plenty of 11/8 available about Smith but 7/5 is slightly bigger and that can be found at Ladbrokes or Boylesports.
Gary Anderson to finish strong
Finally back Gary Anderson to have the highest checkout of his game against Raymond van Barneveld. The Scotsman religiously posts a checkout in excess of 100 win or lose. Barney cannot boast this finishing power, far from it. And the fact he may only ‘win’ three or four legs as opposed to Anderson’s seven means he will have less chances to surpass one of Anderson’s leg-winning checkouts.
