Newcastle United v Liverpool Past Meetings
The last time these two met, Liverpool started in sizzling form, scoring in the second minute and then again just before half-time. Anfield was silenced in the second half, with the Magpies fighting back to steal a point.
In the reverse fixture that season, Newcastle won their home fixture 2-0 despite having only 39% possession. Georginio Wijnaldum – now a Liverpool player – sealed the win in the 90th minute.
Newcastle United v Liverpool Stats
There’s only been one draw in the last 11 Premier League head-to-heads at St James’ Park.
The Mapgies have only lost one of their last six home matches against the Reds, winning three of those. They’re also on a three-game home unbeaten run.
However, when the Tyneside club have lost at home it’s been by quite some margin – 0-6, 1-5 and 0-3 were the results of their last three home losses against the Reds.
Daniel Sturridge has scored in three of his last four appearances against the Magpies, and on his last three starts against them.
The Red have finished with over 60 percent possession in their last six head to heads.
Newcastle United v Liverpool Team News
Newcastle’s summer signing from Eibar, Florian Lejeune, has recovered from his foot injury, but probably won’t start against Liverpool. Jonjo Shelvey could return to the starting lineup.
Simon Mignolet could return to the starting XI after being dropped for Liverpool’s midweek Champions League clash. Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne remain out.
Reason for Newcastle United v Liverpool Bets
Newcastle have had a solid start to the new season. They certainly haven’t looked out of their depth on their return to the top flight, taking maximum points off Stoke and West Ham at home, and holding Tottenham to a draw until Jonjo Shelvey’s red card changed the game.
It seems that St James’ Park is where they’ll take the bulk of their points this season, carrying their impressive form there over from last year in the Championship. They might need the points there too, especially if they continue to struggle away – last weekend’s loss against Brighton at the Amex was a sign of that.
Their fans will be excited for Saturday’s game against Liverpool. The Reds are one of the league’s big hitters, although recent form suggests they’re definitely beatable. Last weekend they hung on to three points against Leicester, benefiting from Jamie Vardy’s late penalty miss. It’s the same old story for the Reds this season, breathtaking at times going forward but equally exasperating at the back.
Rafa Benitez has built a confident side whose natural instinct isn’t to sit back. They’ll try to match the Reds, which could actually play into Jurgen Klopp side’s hands. The Merseyside will have that bit more space to attack, especially at St James’ Park, and that will likely mean there will be plenty of chances.
This promises to be an end to end match, but back the Reds to attack with more efficiency and take the points. An away win can be found at 4/6 with Bet365. The goals market is always a tempting option when Liverpool are playing, and taking everything into account, back a Red win and three or more goals at 29/20 with William Hill.
