Snooker’s Shanghai Masters may no longer hold ranking status but the 2019 competition features an unbelievably strong and select field with every major name in the sport set to take their chances in this valuable event won for the past two years by Ronnie O’Sullivan. Shanghai Masters Snooker Bets Preview
Open to 24 players the format sees the top eight players in the world rankings parachuted directly into the second round with the next eight players in the world snooker rankings having to play an opening round game against a Chinese qualifier beforehand.
Ronnie O’Sullivan just heads the current world rankings, which are based on prize-money, so he is the no.1 seed and sits at the top half of the draw alongside Neil Robertson (seeded 4), John Higgins (5) and Kyren Wilson (8). Reigning world champion Judd Trump (2) is amongst the top-8 seeds in the bottom half of the draw where he’s joined by Mark Williams (3), Mark Selby (6) and Mark Allen (7).
Shanghai Masters Snooker Bets & Picks
We have not seen Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan in action since his shock defeat by James Cahill at the World Championships back in April. But the eventual winner, Judd Trump (3/1 BetVictor), is a perfect seven-from-seven this season marching through the International Championship unbeaten where he easily brushed aside Shaun Murphy 10-3 in the decider and Mark Selby 9-4 in the semis.
Based on his current rich vein of form and with question marks over just how battle ready O’Sullivan will be, Trump is my idea of a great Shanghai Masters snooker bets for outright glory. As a small stakes saver I’ll also take Neil Robertson each way (8/1 Betfair) from the top-half of the draw as he finished off the 2018/19 season with a flourish and has recorded seven century breaks amongst the 28 frames he has won, in claiming four of the five competitive matches he’s contested, this campaign.
1st Round Picks – Murphy to Master Lu
Action gets underway in the early hours of Monday with a first round match that features Shaun Murphy and 21-year-old Lu Haotian. This pair have met just once before and it came on Chinese soil last September when the youngster won 5-3. Unquestionably Haotian, who was a first round casualty in six of the ten ranking events he played least season, can be brilliant on his day but when he is bad he is dreadful.
Talking of dreadful, Murphy had a desperate start to last season but he showed some of his old sparkle in the World Championships and showed continued progression to beat Neil Robertson, Graeme Dott and Mark Allen en-route to the final of last month’s International Championship. Days later he qualified for the China Championship with a 5-2 verdict over Fan Zhengyi. Yes, that was a game he was expected to win but you cannot fail to be impressed with him recording a break of at least 50 in every winning frame including a 141 and 101. Murphy is definitely playing his best snooker in some time and I fancy he will demolish Monday’s opponent in double-quick time.
