Just two ranking tournaments remain before the start of the 2018 World Snooker Championship. The China Open starting on April 2nd and this week’s Players Championship in Llandudno, Wales, which concludes on Sunday.
This Ladbrokes sponsored event is an ‘elite tournament’ meaning the top-16 players based on a one-year ranking list have been invited to play. It will be broadcast on ITV4 and the winner will take home £125,000.
Rocket Ronnie is Flying High
Of this 16 player field we have some form horses such as Ronnie O’Sullivan who has won four of the nine ranking tournaments he has played this season and made the final of two of the three ‘non ranking’ events he has played. Remarkably this is the 42-year-olds best ever season. On these kind of stats he is value at BetBright’s stand-out 9/4 in the outright snooker betting odds.
But Mark Williams is also in peak condition. He has won a brace of ranking events, the Six Red World Championship and made the quarter finals of five other notable competitions.
John Higgins has a similar 2017/2018 profile, most recently winning the Welsh Open snooker event. And Ryan Day is currently riding on the crest of a wave winning the season opening Riga Masters, the recent Gibraltar Open, and winning 10-8 against Stuart Bingham in last weekend’s valuable select field Romanian Masters. He beat Barry Hawkins 4-2, John Higgins 4-1 and Kyren Wilson 5-0 en-route to the decider so he is showing some exceptional form.
As the Welshman is at the opposite end of the draw to O’Sullivan and playing an out-of-form Mark Selby in the opening round, we will make him our pick from the bottom bracket.

Names to bite the dust early?
Talking of poor form… Selby is joined by Judd Trump, Neil Robertson and Ding Junhui as ‘big name’ players who are playing very much below their best. At least one of these can be expected to be dispatched in the first round.
As we need Ryan Day to beat Mark Selby for our outright snooker bet we will skip that game and opt for Stephen Maguire to beat Judd Trump in their first round battle on Wednesday afternoon.
Maguire ran into eventual winner John Higgins in the early stages of the Welsh Open but made the semi-final of the World Grand Prix beforehand, losing no caste when succumbing to Ronnie O’Sullivan 6-4.
Trump meanwhile, he struggled to beat Duane Jones in the opening round of the Welsh Open and went out in the next game against Noppon Saengkham 4-1. This performance followed a first round exit in the World Grand Prix snooker tournament
Snooker odds of 13/8 (2.80) on the Betfair Sportsbook about the Maguire looks a value bet under the circumstances.
