The Paul Hunter Classic began life in 2014 when it was known as the Grand Prix Fürth (as it was staged in Fürth, Germany).  Hunter won that inaugural event and had the competition named after him in 2007 following his premature death.

In 2010 the event became part of the Player’s Tour Championship and as of 2016 it is now a fully-fledged ‘ranking tournament’.  Mark Selby is the reigning champion, defeating Tom Ford 4-2 in last year’s final.  It was the third time Selby collected this prize.

Selby is as short as 11/4 to take his fourth Paul Hunter title but with a ‘best of seven’ frame format throughout the competition backing any player at such a short price is foolhardy.  Furthermore Selby was KO’d in the second round of last week’s China Championship, beaten 5-4 by the little-known Zhou Yuelong in the second round.

In fact we are going to put forward a number of bigger priced contenders with the proviso of betting each-way.

Snooker Betting Tips

Heading our cast is 1997 World Champion Ken Doherty.  The Irishman showed some real sparkle when making the semi-finals of the Riga Masters in June (the season’s opening tournament) and only lost out on a place in the final in a deciding frame defeat to Stephen Maguire (5-4).

The veteran may have been a first round casualty in the China Championship last time, but he was arguably unlucky when losing by 5-frames-to-4 against Shaun Murphy and that player is the 8/1 second favourite in the Paul Hunter event.

Doherty historically does well in this competition.  His first and only career 147 came here (in 2012) and he was a beaten finalist in 2007.

Can Michael Holt the Clock?

Another with course and distance form who is worth considering is Michael Holt.

Winner of this competition in 2006, it’s fair to say the ‘Hitman’ has not gone on to fulfil his potential.  Nevertheless he is still ranked World No. 24.

A finalist in last season’s Rega Masters and quarter finalist in the International Championship, his back-class still shows itself on the odd occasion.

Holt does have one big obstacle to overcome though – a first round clash with Mark Selby.  Suffice to say if he does overcome the World Champion he may feel like he is freerolling and could play accordingly.

McManus still has the hunger

A final suggestion is 100/1 poke Alan McManus.  The former World No. 6 has banked over £2.5 million during his long career but maintains a hunger despite his advancing years.

In fact, he’s currently going well in the China Open snooker beating local hero Ding Junhui 5-0 on Friday.

He made the third round of this competition last season and the draw looks to give him a clear passage to the last 16 of this year’s event save a tricky potential clash with Kyren Wilson in the third round.
