Lewis Hamilton from the front by a big margin in a dull Spanish spectacle
The 2019 F1 season is compiled of 17 character building races, additionally there are the four ‘comathons’: Monaco, Singapore and Hungary – where on-track overtaking is non-existent – and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya where on track overtaking amongst competitive cars is near impossible. 2019 Spanish GP Preview
This race will not send you to sleep but it is likely to be more Downton Abbey than Game of Thrones. An amazing 15 of the last 18 Spanish GP have been won by the pole-setter and invariably they have disappeared off into the distance.
In addition to limited on-track overtakes and pole setters winning there are three standout features of this race: Big margin winners, only a handful of cars normally finish on the lead lap and the safety car is not called into action too often.
Winning Margin Betting
Half of the last ten races staged here were won by 9sec or more, admittedly only one of this season’s four races have been in excess of 8sec but that stat still conspires to make bet365’s 3/1* about an 8sec winning margin on Sunday an attractive F1 betting pick.
Safety Car Betting
It has been needed in 2018 and 2016 following first bend crashes but it is still three-from-ten and if all cars complete the opening lap without incident on Sunday it must be long odds-on that a safety car is not called into play.
No matter how you slice it, William Hill’s 5/6 about the ‘no’ scenario is the obvious option.
Elsewhere the bet365 betting market on the ‘winning qualifying margin’ offers up more value with the 5/4* about ‘under 0.1 sec’ a clear choice.
A Mercedes is a very strong favourite to start on pole here – like it has done for the past six years – and while we fancy it will be Lewis Hamilton that begins from the front (for the fifth time in six years) he may not have much to spare over teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The Finnish pilot has started on pole in the past two races but he had just 0.06sec and 0.01sec to spare (ahead of Hamilton) and he was only 0.1sec adrift of a pole-setting Hamilton in the season opening race in Australia. Hopefully our 5/4 choice makes sense now…
