US Open Golf 2020 Picks / Betting Previews
Gary Woodland (90/1 with 888sport) is the defending champion, having secured, his first Major championship and sixth professional victory in 2019. Brooks Koepka, who won the US Open in 2017 and 2018, (and the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019) is an absentee though, having been plagued by hip and knee pains for the majority of the season.
Current world ranked number one player DUSTIN JOHNSON (17/2 with William Hill) comes into the tournament in excellent form and looks capable of taming what could be a tough course. His only Major to date was the 2016 US Open and a second is long overdue.
In his last four starts, the 36-year-old Johnson has only carded one round over 70, but has shot five rounds of 65 or lower (which included a second-round 60 at the Northern Trust).
US Open 2020 Golf Picks – Main Challengers
According to the golf bookies, Johnson’s main challenger is Spain’s world number two John Rahm (10/1 with BetVictor), who is also in fine form of late. The 25 year-old Spaniard has good consistency over recent Majors, with top 15 finishes in four of his last five starts. His putting ability on Poa Annua greens bodes well too.
Rahm has already recorded wins at tough courses at Muirfield Village for the Memorial and at Olympia Fields for the BMW this year, so looks a definite contender to secure what would be his first Major at Winged Foot.
Justin Thomas (14/1 with bet365*) won the WGC – FedEx St Jude last month and has to be considered a leading contender and there will be plenty of support for Xander Schauffele (16/1 with William Hill), who has already proved himself to be a strong competitor in big tournaments, with five top-10 major finishes dating back to the 2017 U.S. Open.
It’s surely only a matter of time before Bryson DeChambeau (25/1 with 888sport) wins a Major, but he goes to New York in poor recent form and has never really troubled the leaderboard in his five previous starts at the US Open.
US Open 2020 Golf Picks – Aussie Challenge
The Australian JASON DAY (40/1 with William Hill) has been typically consistent of late, with four top-10 finishes in his last six events since the middle of July. The 2015 PGA champion has five-time top-10 finisher at the US Open to his name, including finishing second in 2011 and tied for second in 2013.
Another Australian, Adam Scott (50/1 with 888sport) could be worth a small each-way 2020 US Open golf bet. He has the all round game that’s required at Winged Foot and has three top-10 finishes in his last six visits to the US Open. He also has a tournament win this year to boost his confidence.
US Open 2020 Golf Picks – Lefty at 100/1 ?
At the age of 50, PHIL MICKELSON’s hopes of claiming a sixth Major title are rapidly diminishing. ‘Lefty’ has never won the US Open, but has finished second or tied-second on no fewer than six occasions.
With a second place finish at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational, Mickelson proved he is still a force to be reckoned with. At 100/1 with bet365*, he could represent some each-way value.
