It’s MVG against the field in the Unibet World Grand Prix Darts
The next major darts competition starts at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin on Sunday. It’s the Unibet sponsored World Grand Prix darts tournament which requires player’s to ‘check-in’ with a double in addition to the traditional ‘double check-out’. It can and does lead to some unlikely results. Exhibit A: Robert Thornton winning this event in 2015. Exhibit B: Daryl Gurney 12 months ago. Below we give our World Grand Prix Darts betting picks for this year…

World Matchplay Darts Betting Preview
Michael van Gerwen (aka ‘MVG’) is top-priced 6/5 (2.20) to win this competition with Betfair and Paddy Power. It’s a dreadfully short price about the Dutchman considering he lost against both Gary Anderson and Peter Wright last weekend in the elite ‘Champions League of Darts’ in Brighton before the live BBC cameras.
There have been plenty of darts played since we last saw MVG perform before the Sky Sports cameras, back in July, when the two-time world champion bit the dust in the opening round of the Bet Victor World Matchplay when a 1/25 favourite.
Last weekend’s disappointments apart, MVG was also a shock elimination when playing in the Dutch Darts Championship three weeks ago. Here he was beaten 6-1 by the little-known Irishman William O’Connor.
If you want to back MVG after digesting all that go ahead and do so, personally a repeat of last year’s opening round elimination (to John Henderson on that occasion) would not surprise me in the slightest.
World Matchplay Betting Picks – Two against the Dutch master
I’m recommending a player from both halves of the draw:
- Gary Anderson (below), who could conceivably meet MVG in the semi-final (and a reminder the Scotsman beat him a week ago). He’s available at 7/1 with BetVictor
- And an in-form Mensur Suljovic from the bottom half of the draw. At 22/1 with William Hill the Austrian looks a great each-way World Grand Prix darts bet.
World Grand Prix Darts Betting Picks – First round matches
There’s some value to be had amongst the first round matches too, which are the ‘best of three leg’ affairs.
Big John Henderson went all the way to the semi-finals of this competition 12 months ago – beating MVG and Raymond van Barneveld in the process. He clearly likes this double-in format and he’s playing Daryl Gurney who is way below his best and was also comprehensively beaten by Henderson in the World Championship when they last met.
World Grand Prix Darts Betting Picks – Newcomer without stage fright
Another fancy at odds against is PDC newcomer Danny Noppert.
Noppert has won a title before the TV cameras before (when playing in the rival BDO darts organisation) while Monday night’s opponent, Gerwyn Price, tends to freeze when on a major stage. He is the only player to fail to win a match during a season of the Premier League Darts in that event’s history.

But it is more than a potential case of stage fright which leads us to side with Noppert, who is something of a Julian Clary lookalike. The Dutch youngster boasts victories over Robert Thornton, Mensur Suljovic and Darren Webster during a march to the semi-final of the 2018 PDC International Darts Open in Riesa, Germany just two weeks ago.
Admittedly, and ironically, it was Gerwyn Price that won that competition, but the Welshman had a considerably easier path to the final and was parachuted into the ‘last 32’ whereas Noppert had to play an extra qualifying match.
Summary – World Grand Prix Darts Betting Picks:
Gary Anderson at 7/1 with BetVictor
Mensur Suljovic at 22/1 (each-way) with William Hill
First round matches:
John Henderson to beat Daryl Gurney (9.40pm Sunday) at 21/10 with William Hill
Danny Noppert to beat Gerwyn Price (8.10pm Monday) at 8/5 with Boylesports
